Why Do Numbers Have Five-Element Meanings?

Public Later Heaven correspondences: Kan 1 Water, Kun 2 Earth, central 5 Earth, Qian 6 Metal.

If you have encountered BaZi, the eight trigrams, or number readings, you may have seen statements such as “five belongs to Earth.” How do numbers connect with the Five Elements?

In these traditional systems, numbers can also mark positions and point to a group of related symbolic meanings.

In the common Later Heaven Nine Palaces correspondences, for example, Kan corresponds to one and Water; Qian to six and Metal; Kun to two and Earth. Five occupies the centre and also belongs to Earth.

Kan’s image is water, Qian’s is heaven, and Kun’s is earth. Each also has associated qualities and directions. Numbers, trigrams and the Five Elements can therefore appear together in one relationship chart.

This connects with our earlier Five-Phase correspondence charts: TCM links Water with the Kidney, while the number system links one with Kan and Water. The different layers connect through their shared Five-Element association.

Digital Portrait uses these traditional symbols for personal readings.
